What is Christmas?

  • Commemoration of the birth of Christ
  • Secular holiday

Jesus’ Birth in Scripture

  • Prophesied in Old Testament – Genesis 3:15; Micah 5:2; Isaiah 7:14
  • A time to praise God – Luke 2:9-14
  • Certain “traditional” details absent – day (Luke 2:8), number of wise men (Matthew 2:1), where the wise men saw Jesus (Matthew 2:11)

Religious Observance of Christmas

  • No instruction – Acts 15:24
  • No example – Philippians 3:17
  • No implication

The Observance God Gave Us Relates to Jesus’ Death – Matthew 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Non-Religious Observance of Christmas

  • Nothing wrong with observing days – Romans 14:6
  • But don’t cause a brother to stumble – 1 Corinthians 8:4ff
