Indwelling of the Holy Spirit

Posted on September 10, 2008 at 9:08 pm by Andy Sochor

The Holy Spirit Does Dwell in the Christian (1 Corinthians 6:19; 2 Timothy 1:14)

Other Persons of God also Dwell in the Christian (Romans 8:10; 2 Corinthians 6:16)

How the Holy Spirit Dwells in Us – through the word (compare Ephesians 5:18-6:4 and Colossians 3:16-4:1)

The Spirit Accomplishes What the Word Does

  • Gives life (John 6:63,68)
  • Sanctifies us (1 Corinthians 6:11; John 17:17)
  • Convicts sinners (John 16:8; Acts 2:37)
  • Admonishes us (Nehemiah 9:30 — How? “through Your prophets“)
  • The Jews resisted the Spirit (Acts 7:51 — How? by rejecting the law, prophets, gospel, v. 52-54)

Problems with the Direct, Personal Indwelling Theory

  • The Holy Spirit is a person, not a mystical substance or force
  • The Spirit of God inhabiting a human body is incarnation of Deity
